Amapá is the Brazilian state with the smaller index of degradation of its original vegetal cover. More than the two third parts of his territory they are occupied by forests and the rest is made up of closed and fertile valley. In the coast, almost virgin beaches alternate with the salt marshes, forming the greater Brazilian representation of this bioma, where the salt water mixture and sweet causes the reproduction of the nutritional chain of numerous animal species.
Around 23% of his extension it is protected in 8 units of conservation, that occupy 14% of the territory, and 2 indigenous reserves, that represent 8.7% of their earth. In these they live near five thousand Indians of the Galibi ethnic groups, Karipuna, Palikur and Waiãpi. Next to European, the especially Portuguese, that colonized the state, and to the African that they went there, the Indians form the musical population of this state, where the traditions and the cultural mixture are presents in the gastronomy, rates and the dance. |
Federal territory until 1988, in which it happened to have state autonomy, Amapá has a history of dispute and litigations that involves Dutch Spaniards, Portuguese and. The Treaty of Tordesillas, of 1494, yielded the region to Spain. In 1637, the territory was donated to Bento Manuel Parente, like hereditary captainship, but it was invaded by Dutch, English and French that populated the Guyanas in the border with the state. There were fights and, except the French, the other invaders were expelled. The government of Amapá considers that the sustainable tourism is a promising sector in the regional economy. The S-state is furrowed by a freeway of 900 kilometers. Altogether, near 2,400 km. of highways, although all the sections are not in good state. Bathed by the Amazon and its affluents, the rivers of Amapá are used for navigation.
Macapá, nailed in the Amazonia, the capital of Amapá is a strategic place of shutdown of migratory birds, that jointly to the flamenco ones, toucans, guarás, marine turtles and of river, jacares-açu, peixe-boi, tamanduás-bandeira and tatus-canastra complete the rich fauna of the region and confer colorful a special one to the green one of the floresta. In Macapá, the Amazon river has its waters tamed in beaches of Fazendinha and Araxá, allowing delicious baths.

In Macapá:
- Forte de São, defensive fort pertaining to the military architecture of French influence, constructed by Indians and slaves during 18 years of work.
- Church of São Jose de Macapá, 1761. The church is the oldest monument of the city and preserves the colonial characteristics in the most sober version of the Jesuits.
- House do Artesão, where superb artisan works of ceramics of indigenous art can be acquired, unique and original in the world by the manganese dust coating. In addition also we found other utensils and realized ornaments of the indigenous crafts with teeth, bones of animal, vegetal pens of birds, seeds and fibers.
- “Pororoca�, phenomenon characterized by the encounter of the Atlantic Ocean with the waters of the Araguari river, that are mixed, making noise and forming waves of 5 M.s of height.
Near the capital it is Curiaú, quilombo formed by the slaves, next to Mazagão Velho and Igarapé do Lake, one of the main black communities of the state, where the brought inheritance of Africa for more has been preserved than 200 years.
