The Northeast region includes the states of Alagoas, Bay, Ceará, Maranhão, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe, occupies an approximated extension of 1.561.000 km2s, that corresponds to more of the 18% of the total surface of the country. Most of its territory is formed by an extensive plateau and smoothed by the erosion.

Its population is of more than 46.000.000 of inhabitants, which represents a 29% of the total of the country. The life expectancy in this region is the minor of the country: 64 years. Its demographic densidad is of 29 inhabitants by km2 and most of the population concentrates itself in the urban zone (61%). The main regional metropolis are the cities of Salvador, State Capital of Bay; Recife, State Capital of Pernambuco, and Strength, State Capital of Ceará.
