History

The 28 of June of 1927 Horacio Echeberrieta founded Iberia.

1927: The 14 of December King Alfonso XIII presided over the act of inauguration of the first commercial flight of Iberia. The route, Madrid/Barcelona.

1928: Iberia initiated its commercial activity with three airplanes Rohrbach Roland, trimotors with capacity for ten passengers who traveled in seats of overwhelm, two crew, luggage and load, equipped with washbasin and whose speed 205 end was of km/h.

1939: After twelve years in good condition, Iberia inaugurates the flights with origin or Europe destiny, being Madrid/Lisbon his first route. 

1945: The Spanish airline gives to the jump to America initiating the flights to Buenos Aires, with scales in Villa Cisneros, Natal and Rio de Janeiro. One becomes the first company thus that it establishes, after the war, an air service between Europe and South America.  

1946: The 22 of September not only were inaugurated forward edge between New and the Old Continent, but also the first stewardesses of Iberia traveled, adorned with uniform of military inspiration. The name to designate them was debate object: aeroviarias, air hostesses, butlers or provisadoras were some of the possible options.

1961: The 29 of May of 1961 delivery of the three first reactors of the history of Iberia, the DC-8 is celebrated in California. This model of airplane was considered “the king of the long distances�: New York, Caracas, San Juan of Puerto Rico, Mexico, Havana and Buenos Aires were their destinies.

1970: The 22 of October popularly arrive at the airport from Madrid-Barajas first the Boeing B-747, known like Jumbo. This one was baptized with a so Spanish name, as universal: Cervantes.

1974: At the beginning of Iberia November it establishes the first Airlift of Europe: between Madrid and Barcelona; an effective answer to the high concentration of passengers in the route to certain hours of the day. Flights without reserve that allow, since then, to go and to return between both Spanish cities in the same day.

1987: The 20 of June four European airlines, among them Iberia, create “Amadeus�, a global system of computerized reserves, greatest of the world nowadays. This one provided, and in fact it provides, thousand of travel agencies and office of sale of passages information of schedules, availability of places and prices of tickets of airplane of different airline companies; also it facilitates the reserve, it buys and emission of tickets, among others services.

1999: The 1 of September Iberia Integra totally in the alliance oneworld, the major of the world, in which American Airlines, British Airways, Air Lingus, LAN, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Qantas and Iberia participate. All meetings arrive at near 600 destinies; another form to say it: a flight of the alliance takes off or lands in some airport of the world every five seconds.

2001: The 3 of April, with the exit to Stock market, Iberia finalize the privatization process and the company stops being property of the Spanish State. The following year, it enters to be member of the select group of the Ibex-35.

2003: Better benefits, costs fuel inferiors, operation and maintenance, quieter and less polluting; and in addition, it on board incorporates an extensive program of entertainment, that includes an ample fan of cinematographic and musical options, interactive games and the possibility of communicating with earth from the airplane. Thus it is the Airbus A-340/600 of Iberia, the more modern commercial airplane in good condition.

2005: In the month of Iberia April it sends his new class of businesses for the intercontinental flights, the Business Extra. Armchairs that become beds, more space, major privacy and more the outpost technology are some of their advantages. Months later, the airline releases new menus in this same class, made on prescriptions of famous chef Spanish Sergi Arola. And also in 2005, Iberia realizes another important change: the uniform of its flight and ground crew, designed exclusively by Adolph Domínguez.
